runner (400x400)Running in and around Islamorada, Florida is a chance to enjoy the sunshine and warm ocean air of the Florida Keys, while getting great exercise.

Islamorada is located near the center of the Florida Keys, situated between Key Largo on the east of the islands, and Key West on the other side of the chain.

Marathon, Florida is located – you guessed it – a little over 26 miles west of Islamorada. That is nearly the exact same distance as official marathons. For those runners capable of completing these long-distance treks, this is a rewarding – and aptly labeled – journey.

The Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail (FKOHT) runs for over 106 miles from one side of the Keys to the other, and a path runs parallel to Highway 1 for more than 70 miles of the lengthy stretch of asphalt. It is possible to use the road to continue a journey for the remaining 30 miles, although the path will be shared with motorized vehicles.

Runners traveling along the path would be wise to bring plenty of sunscreen, as the path is largely exposed to the Sun.

Work continues on the FKOHT, and when complete, the path will include water stops, scenic overlooks, catwalks, picnic areas, and other trail services. Several parks are accessible from the trail, providing a chance for a rest, or socialize with others.

Key West marks the southernmost point in the continental United States, and that means there is plenty of wildlife visible on such a trek. Running long distances provides a chance to see detail missed by most anyone speeding by in a car. Dolphins, pelicans, and stingrays can each be seen by observant runners while they exercise.

The FKOHT crosses over 23 rail bridges, the longest of which is seven miles in length, as the path follows an old railroad trail. The longest section of this trail that can be covered without crossing roadway meant for vehicular traffic can be found near Islamorada, leading to Key Largo.

Shorter runs are also available in the Keys, as many runners take to the streets of Key Largo in search of suitable roadways to accommodate their chosen form of exercise. Exchange 18 can be run, bringing participants from Key Largo to Plantation Key, less than eight miles away. The run is fairly level, averaging just around 30 feet above sea level.

Islamorada is one of the most beautiful places in the world to go running, and wildlife can be observed while out on the trail. The Florida Keys are alive with beautiful scenery for anyone willing to go out for a run.
